Example 2: Donald Trump

We all know Donald Trump. We all have an opinion on Donald Trump. However, the question is: did media create our opinion on Donald Trump?

President Trump is considered to be one of the most controversial and scandalous American Presidents. Following series of rough decisions, his approval rates have gone significantly lower since his election. Starting from his consistent plans to build a wall between the US and Mexico and finishing with his decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, Donald Trump did not make life of Americans easy or fun. 

Media portrayal of Mr. Trump is mostly negative and has been so ever since he was elected. His election was called a “media failure”, but he still won. Today, he is one of the most active (and mocked) politicians on the social media, being an active Twitter user. President Trump uses Twitter to comment on everything, including recent Notre Dame fire, when he kindly advised French firemen to use water bombs. 

In the USA, President Trump is present in the media every day in one way or another. It may be his participation in a meeting or his administrative decision. But he is always there. And not always his presence is positive (opposite, it is most often negative).

Despite constant presence in almost all media sources (social media, newspapers, TV), Donald Trump’s image is still highly negative. Considering his lack of political experience and rush decisions, there is a possibility that his image would have been negative without media, but since we do have media, it is possible that our dislike of Donald Trump is slightly exaggerated with the help of media. The possibility of his reelection for the second term is very low. Therefore, media played its role here, as well, and this is another example how media shapes politics.
